The
New York
State Code
Coalition to Protect and
Preserve Our
Communities
Goals:
Member organizations serve widely varied constituencies and have
significantly different missions. The Coalition will monitor
relevant code issues, research appropriate data, and provide
information related to key fire protection issues. Our members
have and will continue to listen to and work, in cooperation, with
other interested parties in the codes process. All of our
organizations are advocates for fire safety and share five common
goals:
1. Limiting life loss and injury
caused by fire
2. Limiting property loss caused
by fire
3. Limiting financial impact, on
our communities, caused by fire
4. Participating in and impacting
the codes process in New York
State
5. Providing accurate and relevant
information to individuals and organizations
In order to meet those goals, each
of the organizations recognizes a need to implement a systematic
approach to fire protection. Our work in the codes process is
essential to meeting our goals. The “system” works in two general
areas, Fire Prevention and Fire Response and focuses upon seven
interrelated objectives. Failure to properly address any of the
seven objectives will result in a decreased level of protection
and an increased level of risk to people, property and community.
The objectives are interrelated and interdependent:
Member Organizations:
The organizations listed below are principal members of the
Coalition. Regional, sectional, county and local representatives
from these organizations also actively participate in Coalition
research, deliberations and information dissemination tasks:
• Association of Fire Districts
of the State of New York
• Firemen’s Association of the
State of New York
• New York
State Building Officials
Conference
• New York
State Association of Fire Chiefs
• New York
State Fire Marshals and
Inspectors Association
Focus:
The Coalition will continue to monitor relevant code issues,
research appropriate data, identify concerns, provide information,
and support the efforts of the Codes Council. Although member
organizations and their representatives are currently involved in
numerous other code issues, the Coalition is currently focused
upon two major issues:
1 . More restrictive codes
2. . Appendix K - Fire
protection in Places of Assembly.
Contacts:
Bill Timmons will serve as the primary contact for the Coalition.
Austin Sennett will be Bill’s backup. Bill and Austin will
coordinate communications with all other Coalition members.
